True, Rubin Kazan did not get out of Group F, but as hosts Chris Riordan and Richard Farley discuss, the Russian champions gave the RPL a reason to be proud and hopeful. In a subtle irony, CSKA is through after their 2-1 at Besiktas was coupled with Wolsburg’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United in Germany. takinga moment to celebrate the accomplishment, Chris and Richard stop to condier a Russian team in the knock-out phase and another one of the new favorites for Europe League.

Hosts Chris Riordan and Richard Farley look at those two results plus the rest of the league’s action in the first half of this, the sixteenth episode of Russian Football Now’s podcast.

In the show’s second half, the hosts preview Tuesday and Wednesday’s matches in UEFA Champions League. Both Russian teams are at home, with Rubin welcoming Dinamo Kyiv on Tuesday while CSKA hosts VfL Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

The Russian Men’s National Team had been assumed to be South Africa bound, but a funny thing happened on the way to the finals. Slovenia, generally considered a large underdog to eliminate the Russians, used a 1-0 victory in Maribor and a Saturday away goal in Moskva to win their UEFA World Cup qualifying playoff over Russia, 2-2 on away goals.

For Russia (who finished the match with nine men), it was a bitter end to what was a qualifying cycle defined by promise. Now what?

To discuss that along with Match Day 29 in the Premier League, Chris and Richard welcome commentator Martyn Hindley, the English voice of the Russian Premier League and the somebody who did commentary for the playoff matches.
